Learn Cuban salsa, also called casino, with Jaime Cruz.

You need no dance partner, no experience and no pre-registration. Come to the free trial lesson and give it a go. We dance Cuban salsa in pairs and rueda de casino, where everyone stands in a circle and swaps partners. The courses are 12 lessons in total, trial lesson included, and each lesson is 60 minutes, so expect a lot of salsa!

How the evening works

Arrive a little before the lesson starts so you have time to hang up your jacket and settle in. The lesson starts a bit differently each time, but sooner or later we dance rueda de casino, a dance where everyone stands in a circle and swaps partners. The first lesson, the trial lesson, is a normal lesson. We do nothing extra.

Bring shoes that are comfortable to dance in. There is no requirement for a particular sole. If you dance the follower role you might like a pair that slides a bit more easily, since there are quite a few spins. Feel free to bring a water bottle too.

After the courses the club begins, and it is included in the course. You can walk in whenever you like during the evening, so please stay. You do not have to dance, and it is completely fine to stay just to talk and hang out. There are seats if you want to watch or take a break, and it is always fine to say no to a dance. Sometimes we have time left over and invite the course participants for fika behind the scenes.

Trial lesson: Every course starts with a free trial lesson. No registration needed, just turn up and take on the challenge!

Experience: None needed. Bring a good mood!

Content: 12 lessons of 60 minutes.

On the beginner course we learn the basic steps of the Cuban salsa style casino and the basics of the variation Rueda de Casino. The idea is to be spontaneous and dance dynamically by always keeping the basic step, while being able to spice it up with different moves. The focus is on the special rhythm and body movement of Cuban salsa. Together we practise simpler moves you can use out on the dance floors!

Cuban salsa is built on the dancers moving around each other in a “cuadrado” (square). From the different positions you then do moves such as the follower's “abajo”, “marcar casino” and “enchufla”. We also go through the basics of rueda de casino, with moves such as “dile que no”, “dame”, “arriba tiempo España”, “pa´tras”, “una con una” and “tarro”.

Experience: A completed beginner course.

Content: 12 lessons of 60 minutes.

Once the basic steps and the rhythm of Cuban salsa are in place, it is time to move on. Here we learn more advanced moves, still with the same idea of dynamics and spontaneity.

We go through moves such as “setenta”, “setenta y medio”, “setenta y cuarto”, “ochenta” and “dame dos con dos”. We also work on different forms of “enchufla”, such as “enchufla doble” and “enchufla uno a cinco”.

The course is a fun challenge that you can happily take several times, since each term focuses on different moves. Keep going until you master the combinations of moves and the rhythms of salsa!

FAQ

Do I need to know how to dance or have a dance partner?

No, you need neither experience nor a dance partner. You can come on your own or with a friend, and we swap partners during the lesson so you dance with new people all the time.

Do I have to be a student or a member?

No, anyone who wants to dance is welcome on the course. Students pay a lower price with a valid Mecenat card, and membership is for those who want to help run the association.

Which role should I pick, leading or following?

That is up to you. The roles have nothing to do with gender, and many people try both. It is a good way to learn the dance and understand your partner better.

I have never danced before and I am afraid of making a fool of myself.

That is one of the most common feelings, and many of us in the association felt the same the first time. On the beginner course nobody has danced before, so everyone learns together, and Jaime goes through the steps one at a time.

What language do you teach in?

Jaime teaches in both Swedish and English.

How do I register and pay?

I missed the first lesson, can I still join?

Yes. If you have missed one of the first two lessons, trial lesson included, you can catch up easily. After that we recommend waiting for next term, since it can get too much if you have never danced salsa before.

Can I come to single lessons?

We do not offer drop-in lessons, since every lesson builds on the ones before. If you just want to try it, the free trial lesson at the start of each term is the best way.

Can I retake the course?

Yes, nothing stops you. On the continuation course we change moves every term, so there is always something new to practise.
